LONDON: Former president of Pakistan General (retd.) Pervez Musharraf, today announced to begin his political career with All Pakistan Muslim League here in a press conference.
"I don't see any political party in the country that can bring a change in the lives of common people. Therefore, I decided to begin my political career with All Pakistan Muslim League."
"I accept my mistakes and assure not to repeat errors of the past."
AGENCIES ADD: Former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf vowed Friday to return to politics as he launched a new party in London, where he has spent the past two years in self-imposed exile.
Speaking at a packed press conference, the retired general said the All Pakistan Muslim League would be a party of "national salvation" for Pakistan.
"The time has come to make Pakistan into a progressive, modern Islamic state," he said, cheered on by dozens of supporters.
Musharraf said Pakistan's current leaders were failing to "show any signs of light in the darkness that prevails in Pakistan".
He spoke against a backdrop comprising the white and green colours of Pakistan's flag and his new party's logo, the crescent and star of the national flag and a hawk's head.
The 67-year-old came to power in a bloodless coup in 1999 but quit in August 2008 after a new government led by the party of assassinated former premier Benazir Bhutto threatened to impeach him.
He was replaced by Bhutto's widower, President Asif Ali Zardari, whose government he has criticised for being hobbled by corruption and nepotism.
